Grave of the Fireflies
An anime motion picture could be as powerful as any other movies. this movie , made in 1988, is beautiful but painful to watch. A simple story in a uncommon period, in the aftermoth of WWII of Japan in 1945. The pillow shoots, including the fire-flies catching, the beach going, bathing, soften the harsh conditions of war-period, fire bombs, air raids, etc. It puts most of the story in a scenary setting on the bank of the river, though the station shoots could make you suffocated. However, the converse between the background beauity and the fate of the brother and sister makes it more touching. Esp. the sister makes the mud 'rice-ball' for her brother and chews the marble 'fruit drops'. The anime movie makes this story abstract and extremely pure, like a perfect crystal...
